Privacy Policy
Solaread is operated by Suwen Works Inc., Ontario, Canada. Effective immediately. Last updated: August 17, 2026.
This Privacy Policy explains what personal information Solaread ("we", "us") collects, how we use and protect it, and the choices you have. Solaread is a local-first English reading application. Anyone may create an account; during the Beta, paid capabilities such as AI translation and PDF parsing require account activation.
1. Who we are
The data controller is Suwen Works Inc., a business registered in Ontario, Canada, at LPH07-95 Oneida Crescent, Richmond Hill, ON, Canada L4B 0H5. For any privacy question or request, contact us at support@solaread.com.
2. What we collect
| Category | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Verified email address, sign-in provider (Google / email code), an internal random user ID, accepted policy versions, assessment-completion and Beta-activation status | To create and secure your account, record your agreement, and apply Beta access rules |
| Your content | Books you import (original file and parsed text), reading position, highlights, notes, bookmarks | To store your library and sync it across your devices (only when you enable cloud sync) |
| Learning profile | Vocabulary assessment results and word feedback stored for your personal experience | To personalize word prediction and interlinear glosses |
| Public-model feedback | Normalized word, languages, optional standard sense ID, and known / unknown / retracted state | To prepare de-identified training data for Solaread's shared vocabulary-prediction model |
| Usage | AI translation volume, PDF pages parsed, prediction requests | To meter paid usage and apply plan limits |
| Technical | Session identifiers, device identifiers | To keep you signed in and operate the service securely |
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your reading content for advertising.
3. Legal bases
We process your information to perform our contract with you, to operate and secure the Service, and on the basis of the choices described here. Cloud sync and private cross-device feedback sync remain separate settings. After you accept the current Terms, this Privacy Policy, and the public-feedback policy, eligible explicit vocabulary feedback is contributed by default to Solaread's shared prediction-model program; you can stop future contribution in Settings.
4. Your controls and consent
In Settings → Account, Cloud sync controls whether your library, progress, and notes are stored in the cloud. Sync vocabulary feedback separately controls whether your known/unknown choices are available on your own other devices. Neither setting grants or blocks public-model contribution.
Public-model contribution starts after current policy acceptance and can be stopped for future feedback in Settings. Stopping contribution does not delete your private feedback or turn off your personal device sync. We do not use feedback created before you accepted the current policy. A retracted feedback event removes the earlier known/unknown fact from pending and future training datasets.
Public-model records never contain book or PDF text, sentences, context, filenames, document IDs, notes, highlights, assessment answers, AI/provider payloads, account identity, device/session data, or implicit behavior. The public-feedback pipeline is separate from DeepSeek, Google Cloud, and other service providers.
5. Service providers (sub-processors)
| Provider | Purpose | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Account database and book file storage | Canada (ca-central-1) |
| Railway | Application backend hosting | United States (migration to Hong Kong planned; this policy will be updated to reflect the actual location) |
| DeepSeek | AI translation of selected text | Processed per provider terms |
| Google Cloud (Document AI) | PDF parsing | Processed per provider terms |
| Resend | Sending email verification codes | Processed per provider terms |
| Paddle | Payment processing and subscription billing (Merchant of Record) | Processed per provider terms |
Each provider processes only the data needed for its function. We do not share provider access tokens with your device; the backend holds them.
6. Where your data is stored
Your account data and uploaded books are stored in Canada (Supabase, ca-central-1). Our application backend currently runs in the United States and is planned to move to Hong Kong; when it does, we will update this section to state the actual location. Some AI providers may process the specific text you submit outside Canada in order to return a translation or parse a document.
7. Your rights
Consistent with Canada's PIPEDA and, where applicable, the EU/UK GDPR, you can:
- Access and export your data — use Settings → Account → Export my data to download a machine-readable copy.
- Delete your account and associated data — use Settings → Account → Delete account. This removes your active account record, synced content, learning profile, usage records, and stored book files. Paddle and Solaread may retain limited billing records—such as billing email, Paddle customer, transaction, and subscription identifiers, transaction status, dates, and event records—for accounting, tax, fraud prevention, refunds, chargebacks, dispute resolution, and legal compliance. These retained records are not used to keep your Solaread account active.
- Change your choices at any time using the Settings controls, including stopping future public-model contribution.
- Object to or restrict certain processing, and lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
To exercise any right you cannot complete in-app, email support@solaread.com.
8. Retention
We keep your data while your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete the associated account data, raw public-feedback records, deletion index, and feedback that has not yet entered a released model. Future training datasets and model versions exclude deleted or retracted feedback. Because a released model combines many records, deleting one account does not instantly remove that record's statistical influence from a model version already released; it is excluded when a later model is rebuilt. Local reading data and staged, unparsed PDFs that never left your device are removed when you clear them in the app or browser.
Billing records described above may be retained after account deletion for the applicable legal and operational recordkeeping period. The link to the active Solaread account ID is removed, but billing contact email and payment-provider references may remain where needed for those purposes.
9. Children
Solaread is not directed to children under 13 (or the age of digital consent in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
10. Changes
We may update this policy; the "Last updated" date reflects the latest version. Material changes will be communicated in-app or by email where appropriate.
